Ali’i Beachboy and Company was put together in honor of my father Herman Soares, who named the now world famous Ali’i Beach located on the North Shore of Oahu. Back in 1948 my father was an outstanding football player at his high school in Waialua. So much so that he was invited as the only public school player to participate in the prestigious Aloha Bowl which showcased the top private school All-Stars.
My father returned to his favorite surf spot a town hero and because the team he played on had Ali’i (meaning royalty) as part of the team name, my father was bowed down to by his fellow surf mates and given the best waves of the day. (The lasted one day!)
When the location was developed as a City Beach Park they honored my father by officially naming it Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park
As for me, surfing became a passion of mine after the first wave my father pushed me on in Kaiaka Bay back in 1971, beachfront of our family home.
My surf experience is enhanced by my career having been a Water Safety Instructor Trainer with both the American Red Cross and later with the YMCA of Honolulu. I also started a Learn to Surf program at two of the Honolulu Y.M.C.A. branches.
